Hair Loss

Recently I had a really nice conversation about reversing hair loss with a female friend of mine. Her hair stylist had told her that daily deep conditioning with a coconut oil deep conditioner formula was the answer to reversing the progressive thinning that was causing her hair to disappear. And after all, her well meaning hair stylist would be minus a paying customer if there was little or no hair left to style.

Is our friendly hair stylist really on to something?

If the goal is to condition the hair the answer is probably yes. If the goal is to reverse the balding process the answer is almost certainly no!

Balding and/or thinning hair doesn't always have to be isolated to one cause

There are hundreds of possibilities when it comes to what could be causing hair loss. Examples could be heredity, emotional stress, lousy eating habits, crash dieting, many different types of sickness, persistent high fever, many different types of prescription medications, thyroid disease, scalp infections, and even hair loss caused by tight or pulled back hair styles (traction alopecia).

Additionally, as father time becomes obsessed with making sure we look our very worst the natural hair replacement cycle simply isn't as effective as it once was, with the end result being hair thinning or balding.

There are others causes as well but it doesn't take much of a stretch of the imagination to see how the combinations of heredity, age, and stress could result in a noticeable amount of balding.

When hair loss or thinning is gradual and progressive it could prove to be permanent

Creepy isn't it. Maybe even kind of sneaky. The idea that a condition could be working to rid you of your precious hair without even knowing what was going on, that is until it is too late to do much about it.

This is exactly what many of those with a hereditary condition known as male or female pattern baldness are currently experiencing. In fact, about one out of every two people have this type of hair loss by the age of 50.

Both male and female pattern balding attack the hair just below the scalp at the follicle level. Over time these two conditions will cause millions of hair follicles to shrink, and eventually die, making new healthy hair growth a thing of the past.

The main culprit that drives male and female pattern balding is the androgen hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which accumulates deep within the follicle complex.

I should also add that no amount of coconut oil deep conditioning is going to pry open our damaged, dying, or dead follicles. Nevertheless, it might be helpful if we are successful in finding a way to bring our dead follicles back to life.

Helpful hint: Early recognition is critical. The sooner balding and thinning is recognized, the cause determined, and treatment implemented the better the chances of halting and reversing hair loss.

What next? There are currently a handful of hair re-growth products (specially formulated for both men and women) which have been proven to be effective both in blocking harmful hormones and bringing the all important dead hair follicles back to life.

These specially formulated treatments can be used both as a preventative tool, starting before hair loss becomes severe, or after loss of hair has become noticeable. Whatever the level of balding or thinning you are experiencing these products could be just what is needed to overcome this latest life challenge.
